“A podcast is a great way to develop relationships with hard to reach people.” - Tim Paige
Podcasting is an audio program available for download on almost any technology device. What if we told you that podcasting could grow your business? Sometimes, podcasting is educational. Other times, it is simply a fun conversation. It all depends on the topic. When the listener clicks on a podcast, they have the opportunity to feel like they are a part of the conversation. Our goal at Sonder is to help your business grow and give you the means to properly speak of traveling in an intriguing way. Every podcaster’s dream is to make the audience say, “Hey, I want that too!”.
One quick google search will show you that there are quite a few travel podcasts out there. How did they get there? How do you know for sure that you will have an interesting topic that intrigues listeners? The first step is picking an interesting topic. Famous travel podcaster, Chris Christenson says, “You increase the chance obviously by creating a good podcast but you increase it even more by creating something that people want, something that they are already looking for”. Travel is a wonderful topic but you must convince people to adore the idea of traveling the world. The key is to broaden your horizons.
Travel is a broad topic because it (quite literally) covers a lot of ground. There are countless places to travel to. It is necessary to keep in mind the idea that different places intrigue different people. Therefore, you ought to consider numerous places to speak of in your travel podcast. For example, if you make the decision that you will only speak of traveling to cities, those who hate the city and long to relax in peace, may not appreciate your podcasts, and then place their attention elsewhere. That is not what you want! Our goal at Sonder is to reach as many people as we can with our content, and hopefully, that is your goal as well.
So, who exactly is your audience? Obviously, the answer would be travelers. To ask a more specific question, what age is your audience of fellow adventurers? A couple of weeks ago, when we spoke of newspapers we concluded that the older generation is your best bet. Because podcasts are digital, the younger generation makes up a variety of listeners. In 2020 it was reported that 40% of listeners are from age 12-24, and 32% between the ages of 25-54. This leaves only 17% of listeners over the age of 55. What does this mean for your business? While there are some exceptions, the elderly generation does not use podcasts. Taking these statistics into account, you must make a choice. Who will you market towards? Ages 12-24 or 25-54? The answer may be one or both, nevertheless, you must know to whom you are marketing toward.
If you choose the younger ages on the scale, your topics ought to cover activities the younger generation takes interest in. This includes sledding, surfing, hiking, etc. If you seek to advertise to those on the older end of that spectrum then your main focus should be relatable to them. This may mean mentioning activities such as relaxing in beautiful beaches and resorts. This also includes those who may not be physically able, or simply do not take interest in strenuous activities. The key is to pick your niche and target them in every podcast.
Creating a podcast can seem overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. To begin, pick a reason, pick a schedule, and pick a format. Picking a reason is necessary because fellow travelers must understand why you do what you do and why they should be listening to you. You ought to have a regular time of posting because structure and consistency communicate that you are reliable. A format ought to be picked, however, this can be more lenient. In general, a podcast should be short enough to keep the listener’s attention, but long enough to cover everything important. Keeping all this in mind, you are on the right track to a successful podcast.
You have a lot of freedom with your travel podcast. Essentially podcasts can be whatever you want them to be. Listeners will enjoy hearing what your company has to offer if you present it in the right way. What is the tone of your business? Are you spontaneous or well-planned? Whatever your vibe is let it shine through every episode. Simply keep in mind your audience and the strategies we spoke of in this blog that will most likely continue to peak their interests. The world is full of fascinations and a podcast gives you the freedom to tell people about them!
